in hawaii. cnn's brianna keeler is there. brianna there is no official word when he is coming back to the mainland, as that fiscal cliff deadline gets closer what do you think will happen out there as the week rolls on? >> reporter: well, miquel, it's hard to believe that president obama would not at some point come back to washington it is not officially on his calendar at this point but he has obviously come out here for christmas break while congress is away from washington as well and it is, of course, a little bit of a working vacation for him, as the white house tries to work something out with senate democrats, some sort of package to avoid these tax hikes for middle class americans here tend of the year. that's something, of course that will require some buy-in from senate republicans to pass. and it seems that unlikely that senate minority leader mitch mcconnell would want to negotiating? that he doesn't feel will be able to also pass the house, which would require the support of some house republicans and that's part of the reason why this is such a difficult task and it

today. the president is pulling the plug on his trip to hawaii to tend to urgent matters in washington. with tax hikes looming in less than a week, he's scheduled to return to the white house tomorrow, just as a deadlocked congress reconvenes days ahead of the so-called fiscal cliff. you're just six days from feeling this. now, first hit is coming on january 1st when your take home pay will drop by 2% because of a scheduled hike in the social security payroll tax. that's just the start. income taxes are set to climb too. and you'll notice that when employer gets to around the adjusted withholding, the government spending cuts, those are also scheduled for january 1st and bound to slow the economy and some argue they'll weaken the military. congress has seen this coming, but an effort to limit the damage failed last week. republican house speaker john boehner could not persuade enough members of his party to let tax rates rise on incomes over a million dollars while sparing everyone else. dana bash is our senior congressional correspondent. dana, this time tomorrow, the president is sup

correspondent brianna keilar is traveling with the president in hawaii. she joins us live from honolulu. people are talking as though going over the cliff is a reality already. what are you hearing? >> reporter: that is what we're hearing. there's a lot of blame going around. that's some public posturing. when it comes to the reality of whether going over the cliff is a possibility, it's not just what we're hearing publicly but privately from democrats and republicans. and also it's important to focus on this sort of not encouraging fact, carol. there are no discussions going on now between the folks who need to work out some sort of deal here. the white house and senate democrats are not in touch with house republicans and that's key because the senate is going to be reconvening on thursday. anything that gets through congress would need to pass the senate and house with both democratic and republican support. we're also expecting that president obama will likely return to washington, d.c. at this point it seems more a matter of when and not really matter of if. and then right now the plan tha
